AI is everywhere -- will the robots replace us?

AI-generated fitness programs are popping up everywhere on the cheap. As a result, AI will make fitness programming more accessible.

It will also make it lower quality and more generic.

Because that's all AI can do — compare you to patterns of what it believes other people trying to get fit should be doing based solely on what other people trying to get fit are doing.

Now, if you’re the average person — someone who doesn’t lift or do cardio regularly and is primarily motivated by weight loss — then being compared to average people trying to get fit might not be a stretch.

But If that’s not you, understand that AI will flatten you into an average person, doing average person things.

Robots will always fundamentally misunderstand you as a human when you're not like everyone else in the bucket it decides you belong in.

Buyer beware.

But here’s the other issue, I see coaches trying to scale beginning to outsource your results to AI in order to take on more clients to hit their revenue goals while minimizing work hours.

No shade, we all have bills to pay.

However, keep in mind — as an informed consumer — that if you find a bargain price for coaching now, this is likely the trade-off you’re making.

AI bots are writing your programs and responding to your check-ins based on their generalizations, rather than the nuance of your actual experience and goals.

Then, just last week, the app I've used for more than a decade to coach my athletes and deliver their programs released an optional Al component called "FitMetrics" that promises to help coaches take on more clients without adding more work hours.

The promise being that one coach can comfortably coach 100+ people.

Um, no.

Call me an oldster but when I hire a coach it's because I want an expert human who understands nuance guiding me - not some robot flattening me into a one-dimensional average person telling me to be more average.

And when I polled my audience on Instagram — asking them if they would be okay with paying for coaching if it was really just AI doing the work — BIG SHOCKER: 100% of people said "no."

So let me just go on record now:

I have never and will never use Al to respond to client check ins, provide coaching or feedback, or to generate or even assist with the generation of training programs for my clients.

And even as an expert myself, I will never outsource my own coaching to Al. Humans are better at being humans than Al will ever be.

Yes, AI will likely replace many coaches.

It’ll replace the ones chasing profits over depth.

It’ll replace the ones who only coach average people happy with average results.

However, it will not replace the great ones. They have something that AI cannot replace.

P.S. I've got 3 coaching spots open. Ready to stop being told how to be more average by a machine? Looking to bring a bit more humanness into your personal journey? Read about my current coaching offers here or take this quiz to find your perfect fit.

Think about the last time you were so absorbed in a run that you lost track of time. Legs burning, lungs working hard, nowhere else you'd rather be. No phones, no emails, no to-do list, no distractions. Just you, your effort, and your values — aligned. Now think about last Tuesday. You worked hard. Juggled responsibilities. Put out fires. And at the end of the day, you collapse on the coach trying to figure out what exactly you accomplished in all that busyness. You couldn't name one thing...

I surveyed runners recently and one response stopped me: “Why isn’t there enough info out there about women and being strong and fit into old age?” That question stuck with me, partly because it’s personal. I’m 46, I run ultras, and I've got no intention of stopping anytime soon. So I went back through the last five years of results from a local trail 25K and 50K recently. I wanted to see who's still out there in their 50s, 60s, and 70s. Women show up in force in their 30s and 40s. In the...

Hi -- this is Samson (my baby boy who just beat cancer 🎉). He wants you to know that we still need at least 26 more runners to complete our market research survey. If you are dealing with or have recently dealt with injuries or pain that limited your running, it would be such a huge favor to us if you would complete this 10-minute survey. Not an injured runner? Please forward this email and survey with someone who is. Samson, Duke, and I will be randomly selecting winners from the submissions...
